Derby della Madonnina Ends in 1-1 Stalemate as Stefan de Vrij Saves Inter Milan

Inter Milan took a significant step towards the Champions League quarterfinals with a 2-0 win at Feyenoord on Wednesday. The victory was secured through goals from Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martinez in Rotterdam.

Thuram gave Inter the lead in the 38th minute with an acrobatic volley, while Martinez sealed the win with a shot into the top corner in the 50th minute. This strike saw Martinez become Inter’s joint record scorer in European club soccer’s most prestigious competition with 18 goals, equaling the record of Brazil great Adriano ³.

Feyenoord had their chances, with Jakub Moder hitting the bar, but Inter could have made it 3-0 when they were awarded a penalty for a foul on Thuram just after the hour mark. However, Feyenoord goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther saved Piotr Zielinski’s low shot.

The win puts Inter in a strong position ahead of the second leg at the San Siro on March 11. The winners of the tie will face either Bayern Munich or Bayer Leverkusen for a spot in the semi-finals.

Inter coach Simone Inzaghi had to deal with an unprecedented defensive injury crisis, with four of his five fullbacks injured, but his team rose to the challenge. Feyenoord, meanwhile, were looking to build on their recent upset wins over Bayern Munich and AC Milan in the competition.
