FG Declares Tuesday Public Holiday to Honor Late Former President Muhammadu Buhari

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday in honor of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in London at the age of 82. The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as part of a broader seven-day national mourning period spanning from July 13 to July 19, 2025.
The public holiday serves as a tribute to Buhari’s significant contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey, governance, and national development. The late former president, who served as Nigeria’s leader from May 29, 2015, to May 29, 2023, was widely recognized for his commitment to fostering peace, stability, and unity in the country. His tenure as a democratically elected president followed his earlier role as military head of state from December 31, 1983, to August 27, 1985, making him one of Nigeria’s most prominent leaders.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Tunji-Ojo described the holiday as an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on Buhari’s life, leadership, and enduring legacy. “This public holiday is a moment for all Nigerians to honor the memory of a leader who dedicated his life to the service of our nation,” the statement read. “We urge citizens to use this day to reflect on his values of peace, patriotism, and commitment to national unity.”
As part of the mourning activities, the Federal Government has directed that all national flags be flown at half-mast across the country and at Nigerian missions abroad during the seven-day period. The gesture symbolizes the nation’s respect and reverence for the late leader, whose influence spanned decades of Nigeria’s political history.
President Tinubu, in his condolence message, praised Buhari’s contributions to Nigeria’s development, particularly in areas such as infrastructure, security, and anti-corruption efforts. He noted that Buhari’s leadership style, marked by integrity and simplicity, left an indelible mark on the nation. “President Buhari’s legacy is one of service and sacrifice. His life’s work will continue to inspire generations of Nigerians,” Tinubu said.
The public holiday declaration has been met with widespread acknowledgment from various quarters, including political leaders, civil society organizations, and citizens, who have expressed their condolences and shared tributes highlighting Buhari’s role in shaping modern Nigeria. Many have taken to social media platforms, including X, to share memories of his leadership, with hashtags like #BuhariLegacy and #ThankYouBuhari trending in the wake of his passing.
Citizens are encouraged to participate in activities that honor Buhari’s memory, including prayer sessions, memorial events, and moments of reflection on his contributions to national unity and progress. The Federal Government has also assured that further details regarding state funeral arrangements, if any, will be communicated in due course.
As Nigeria observes this period of mourning, the public holiday on Tuesday provides a solemn opportunity for the nation to come together in remembrance of a leader whose life was dedicated to the service of his country.
