Federal Government of Nigeria Declares Public Holidays for Easter Celebration

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Friday, April 18, 2025, and Monday, April 21, 2025, as public holidays to commemorate the Easter celebrations. The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement released on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, in Abuja.
The public holidays are designated to mark Good Friday and Easter Monday, key dates in the Christian calendar that celebrate the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The declaration aligns with Nigeria’s tradition of recognizing significant religious festivals for both Christian and Muslim communities, fostering unity and reflection across the nation.
In his statement, Dr. Tunji-Ojo extended warm congratulations to the Christian faithful in Nigeria for witnessing another Easter season. He emphasized the importance of the period, urging Christians to embody the values of love, forgiveness, and compassion exemplified by Jesus Christ. “Easter is a time to reflect on the ultimate sacrifice and to imbibe the virtues of selflessness and unity,” the Minister noted.
The Minister also called on all Nigerians, irrespective of religious affiliation, to use the occasion to pray for the peace, stability, and prosperity of the nation. He highlighted the significance of collective prayers and goodwill in addressing the challenges facing Nigeria, encouraging citizens to remain steadfast in their support for the country’s progress.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, Dr. Tunji-Ojo assured Nigerians that efforts are ongoing to enhance national development and improve the welfare of citizens. He urged the public to remain patriotic and supportive of the government’s initiatives aimed at transforming the nation.
The declaration of the public holidays is expected to provide Nigerians with an opportunity to spend time with family and loved ones, attend religious services, and engage in community activities. The government has also advised citizens to observe the holidays responsibly and adhere to safety guidelines during the festive period.
As Nigeria joins the global Christian community in celebrating Easter, the Federal Government’s gesture underscores its recognition of the cultural and spiritual significance of the season, fostering a sense of togetherness and hope for a brighter future.
