The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has vowed to continue demolishing illegal structures in the nation’s capital. This comes despite the recent backlash and criticism from residents and stakeholders.

Wike’s Stance on Demolitions

Wike, who has been at the helm of the FCT administration since May 2023, has maintained that the demolitions are necessary to restore the original master plan of the city. He argued that many of the structures were built without proper approval and were encroaching on areas designated for public facilities, such as parks, roads, and utilities.

“We will not be intimidated or blackmailed into abandoning our responsibility to enforce the law and protect the interest of the FCT,” Wike said in a statement. “We will continue to demolish any structure that is built without approval or is encroaching on areas designated for public facilities.”

Reactions from Residents and Stakeholders

The demolitions have sparked widespread outrage and criticism from residents and stakeholders, who argue that the exercise is inhumane and has left many people without homes or livelihoods.

“This is a clear case of insensitivity and disregard for human rights,” said a resident, who preferred to remain anonymous. “Many of us have invested our life savings in these properties, and now they are being demolished without any compensation or alternative housing.”

The Way Forward

As the demolitions continue, there are growing calls for the FCT administration to adopt a more humane and sustainable approach to urban planning and development. This includes providing alternative housing and compensation for affected residents, as well as engaging in meaningful consultations with stakeholders before embarking on any demolition exercise.

“It is not enough to simply demolish structures without providing any alternative or support for affected residents,” said a stakeholder. “The FCT administration must adopt a more holistic and sustainable approach to urban planning and development, one that prioritizes the needs and rights of all residents.”
