Court Grant Emefiele N300m Conditional Bail

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has been granted bail by a Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday. The court granted Emefiele bail in the sum of N300 million with two sureties in like sum, after he was arraigned on charges of negligence and unlawfully obtaining N11 billion from the apex bank.
Emefiele had earlier pleaded not guilty to the charges and had been remanded in custody pending the determination of his bail application. The court, however, granted him bail on the condition that he would deposit his passport with the court’s Registrar and not travel out of the country without the permission of the court.
The court, in a ruling that was delivered by Justice Hamza Muazu, further ordered the embattled erstwhile CBN boss to produce two sureties, who must be resident within the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, and have landed property within the Maitama District.
It fixed November 28 to commence full-blown hearing on the six-count charge the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, preferred against the Defendant.
The case has generated a lot of interest and controversy in the country, with many Nigerians expressing their displeasure at the alleged actions of the CBN Governor. However, Emefiele has maintained his innocence and vowed to clear his name of all charges.
