Federal Government Declares June 12 Public Holiday to Commemorate Democracy Day

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Thursday, June 12, 2025, as a public holiday to mark Democracy Day, a significant national event that celebrates the country’s democratic journey. This announcement was made by Magdalene Ajani, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Interior, through a statement released to the public.
Democracy Day, observed annually on June 12, holds profound historical and political significance in Nigeria. It commemorates the annulled presidential election of June 12, 1993, widely regarded as one of the freest and fairest in the nation’s history, where the late Moshood Abiola was presumed to have emerged victorious. The day also serves as a tribute to Nigeria’s resilience in sustaining 26 years of uninterrupted civilian rule since the return to democratic governance in 1999.
In her statement, Ajani emphasized the importance of reflecting on the principles of democracy, good governance, and the sacrifices made by Nigerians to uphold these values. She urged citizens to use the occasion to recommit to strengthening the nation’s democratic institutions and fostering unity, peace, and progress.
The public holiday declaration is expected to provide Nigerians with an opportunity to participate in various activities, including events organized by the government and civil society groups, to celebrate the milestones achieved in the country’s democratic journey. It also serves as a moment to honor the contributions of pro-democracy activists who fought for the restoration of democratic rule in Nigeria.
As is customary, the holiday will see the closure of government offices, banks, and some private institutions, while public events such as parades, lectures, and cultural displays are anticipated across the country. Nigerians are encouraged to engage in activities that promote national unity and reflect on the importance of sustaining democracy for future generations.
This announcement aligns with the Federal Government’s tradition of recognizing June 12 as a day to celebrate Nigeria’s democratic heritage and honor the collective efforts of its citizens in building a stronger, more inclusive nation.
