NYSC Begins Payment of Arrears to Corps Members Owed Increased Allowance

NYSC Youth Corper Overjoyed After Receiving ₦77,000 Allowance

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has commenced the payment of arrears to former corps members following the implementation of the new N77,000 monthly allowance, a significant increase from the previous N33,000. This development aligns with the Federal Government of Nigeria’s approval of the new minimum wage structure in September 2024, which took effect for NYSC members in March 2025. The arrears, covering the difference between the old and new allowances, are being disbursed to outgone corps members who served prior to the implementation date.

The initiative has brought relief to many former corps members, with several confirming receipt of their backlog payments. Social media platforms, particularly X, have been abuzz with celebratory posts from beneficiaries expressing gratitude for the government’s action. For instance, one ex-corps member shared, “Finally received my NYSC arrears! Thank you, FG, for keeping your promise.” Such sentiments reflect the widespread anticipation and eventual satisfaction among those who had awaited these payments.

The NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, had earlier assured corps members that the government was committed to settling the arrears. Speaking at a press briefing, he emphasized that the NYSC has the bank details of all eligible former corps members and would ensure prompt payment once funds were released by the Federal Government. “We are working diligently to clear all outstanding arrears. No qualified corps member will be left out,” he stated, addressing concerns about delays.

The payment process, however, has not been without its challenges. In early 2025, the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) raised an alarm over the delay in disbursing the increased allowance and arrears to over 600,000 former corps members. According to HURIWA, six batches of corps members who served in 2024 were yet to receive the adjusted allowance or their backlogs, despite the government’s directive. The group called for transparency and swift action, citing the economic hardships faced by many ex-corps members who relied on these funds.

The approval of the N77,000 allowance was a landmark decision, reflecting the government’s recognition of the rising cost of living and the need to support young graduates serving the nation. The NYSC, a mandatory one-year program for Nigerian graduates under the age of 30, plays a critical role in fostering national unity and providing professional exposure. The allowance increase was widely welcomed, but its delayed implementation for arrears had sparked debates about the government’s efficiency in fulfilling financial obligations.

With payments now underway, the NYSC and the Federal Government have reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring all eligible former corps members receive their dues. The ongoing disbursement is expected to cover all outstanding arrears, providing financial relief to thousands of young Nigerians who have served their country. As the process continues, stakeholders are hopeful that the government will maintain transparency and efficiency to avoid future delays.

For further inquiries or to verify payment status, former corps members are advised to contact NYSC state secretariats or visit the official NYSC website. The successful rollout of these arrears payments marks a significant step in supporting Nigeria’s youth and reinforcing trust in the NYSC program.
