Rivers State: PDP Heads to Court as Gov Fubara Swears in Elected LGA Chairmen

Minister Of Fct Wike Png 1

Port Harcourt, Nigeria – The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State has vowed to challenge the recent local government elections in court, describing the polls as “an exercise in futility.” This comes after Governor Siminalayi Fubara sworn in the newly elected council chairmen of the 23 local government areas of the state.

PDP’s Stand

The PDP, loyal to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, insists that the election should not have held, citing a Federal High Court judgment that barred the conduct of the poll. Kenneth Yowika, the party’s Publicity Secretary, stated:

“We will not recognize the elected chairmen, as the election was illegal. We are a law-abiding party and will seek justice through the courts.”

APC Rejects Election Results

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has also rejected the election results. Chibuike Ikenga, the party’s Publicity Secretary, said:

“We will press for justice in court. The election was marred by irregularities and should be nullified.”

Governor Fubara’s Response

Governor Fubara defended the elections, stating that they were free and fair. He assured that his administration will not engage in undemocratic actions.

“We conducted the elections in line with the law. The winners emerged through a transparent process,” Fubara said.

Implications

The outcome of the court case will have significant implications for the governance of Rivers State. If the elections are nullified, it could lead to a re-run, potentially altering the political landscape.
