Multichoice Defies Tribunal, Hikes DStv, Gotv Fees

Tribunal Halts DStv GOtv Price Hikes

In a dramatic turn of events, MultiChoice, the parent company of DSTV and GOTV, has blatantly disregarded an order from the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal (CCPT) and proceeded to hike subscription rates for its DStv and GOtv packages. This defiance has sparked outrage among millions of subscribers who feel betrayed by the company’s disregard for the legal system and their interests.

The CCPT had previously issued an order restraining MultiChoice Nigeria Limited from increasing its subscription tariffs and cost of products and services, effective May 1, 2024. Despite this, MultiChoice has implemented the price hike, with the new rates already being enforced.

The tribunal’s ruling was initially hailed as a victory for consumers, who had protested the price hike citing economic hardship and the company’s failure to justify the increase. However, MultiChoice’s defiance has raised questions about its commitment to ethical business practices and respect for the law.

In response to MultiChoice’s refusal to accept court documents, the CCPT granted an application for substituted service, allowing the interim order to be served through alternative means. This move was seen as necessary due to allegations that MultiChoice’s officers in Abuja refused to receive service of the order and other court documents.

The price increases, which took effect from May 1, 2024, have been a source of frustration for subscribers.
