Kano Residents Protest Over the Sack of Gov Abba Yusuf
The city of Kano, Nigeria was thrown into turmoil as protesters took to the streets to express their outrage over a recent verdict by the Appeal Court. The verdict had sacked the incumbent governor, Abba Kabir, and declared his opponent, All Progressives Congress (APC)’s Nasiru Gawuna, as the rightful winner of the 2023 gubernatorial election in the state.
The protesters, largely made up of supporters of Governor Yusuf, were seen carrying placards and chanting slogans denouncing the verdict. Accused Ganduje behind the ruling of the court verdict. They accused the judiciary of bias and demanded a review of the judgment.
The situation was made worse by reports of violence and vandalism, with some protesters setting fire to vehicles and attacking government buildings. The police were quick to respond, dispersing the crowds with tear gas and making several arrests.
Observers fear that the protests could escalate into a wider conflict, given the tense political climate in the state and the country at large. The federal government has called for calm and urged all parties to respect the rule of law and due process.
