PHED Shortdown Operations Joins NLC & TUC in Nationwide Strike
The Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution (PHED) has joined forces with the National Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in a nationwide strike. The strike is in response to the government’s failure to address the issue of unpaid salaries, high cost of fuel increase and pensions of workers in the public sector.
PHED, which is responsible for power supply, has been hit hard by the government’s inability to pay workers’ salaries and pensions. The strike action is expected to have a significant impact on the provision of essential services, including power management and supply of electricity.
The NLC and TUC have called on the government to urgently address this issue and ensure that workers in the public sector are paid their due salaries and pensions. They have also called on all workers in the public sector to join the strike action until their demands are met.
The PHED is determined to continue with the strike until their demands are met. They have stated that they will not be deterred by any form of intimidation or victimization. The government has been urged to take immediate action to address this issue in the interest of the public and the workers affected.
The strike has already caused disruptions in several parts of the country, with failure to supply electricity grinding to a halt in some areas. The situation is likely to worsen if the government fails to take prompt action to resolve the issue.
Many workers in the public sector have been struggling to make ends meet due to the non-payment of salaries and pensions, which has led to untold hardship for them and their families. The NLC and TUC have emphasized that this is not just a matter of workers’ rights, but also a matter of public interest, as the provision of essential services is at stake.
The government has been urged to prioritize the payment of workers’ salaries and pensions, and to take measures to prevent a recurrence of this issue. The PHED Shortdown Operations has called on all well-meaning Nigerians to support their cause, and to join them in their fight for justice and fairness for all workers in the public sector.
